What Is the VH1–VH5 Spectrum?

The VH1–VH5 Spectrum is a five-level framework for describing how much of a creative work comes from a human — and how much comes from AI.

  • It is not a binary. It is a spectrum.

  • At one end, VH5 represents entirely human-created work. At the other, VH1 represents entirely AI-generated work. As the number increases, so does human authorship and creative control.

  • The spectrum provides a shared language for creators and audiences to understand how a work was made.

The Anchor

The spectrum is anchored at two clear endpoints:

    •    VH5 sits at the top — entirely human-created
    •    VH1 sits at the bottom — entirely AI-generated

Between them, VH3 marks the certification threshold for VerifiedHuman™.

VH3 represents work that is human-led, with AI assisting but never controlling the creative process.

The Five Levels

VH5

  • Entirely human-created.

  • No generative AI is involved in the creation of the work. Traditional tools — including pens, brushes, cameras, instruments, and standard software — are fully permitted.

  • The work reflects human imagination from beginning to end.

  • ✔ Qualifies

VH4

  • Human-created, AI-enhanced.

  • AI may assist with non-creative or supportive tasks such as research, grammar checks, brainstorming, or technical cleanup.

  • The creator’s voice and decisions clearly dominate the finished work.

  • ✔ Qualifies

VH3

  • Human-led, AI-assisted.

  • The creator leads the creative process. AI may contribute — generating drafts, suggesting ideas, or assisting with elements — but does not control the outcome.

  • The creator substantially transforms any AI output into their own work.

  • This is the minimum threshold for VerifiedHuman™ certification.

  • ✔ Qualifies — Minimum

Certification Threshold

VH2

  • AI-led, human-directed.

  • AI generates the majority of the content. A human provides prompts, direction, and oversight, but the creative work itself originates primarily from the machine.

  • ✘ Below Threshold

VH1

  • Entirely AI-generated.

  • A prompt produces an output with no meaningful human creative involvement.

  • ✘ Below Threshold

Common Questions

What is VH5?

VH5 is entirely human-created work. No generative AI is used in its creation.

Traditional tools — including word processors, photo editors, and digital audio workstations — are allowed. The creative vision, execution, and output are fully human.

What is VH1?

VH1 is entirely AI-generated work. A prompt produces an output with no meaningful human creative involvement.

It represents the bottom of the spectrum and falls below the VerifiedHuman™ certification threshold.

What is VH3?

  • VH3 is the minimum threshold for VerifiedHuman™ certification.

  • The creator leads the creative process. AI may assist, but the human makes the key creative decisions and meaningfully transforms any AI-generated material.

  • The work is human-led, AI-assisted.

Does a higher number mean more AI or more human?

A higher number means more human.
    •    VH5 = fully human
    •    VH1 = fully AI

As the number increases, human authorship increases.

Which levels qualify for VerifiedHuman™ certification?

  • VH3, VH4, and VH5 qualify.

  • VH1 and VH2 fall below the certification threshold.

  • Certification is applied per work, not per creator. A creator may produce work at any level, but only work meeting VH3 or above receives the VerifiedHuman™ mark.

Why use a spectrum instead of a binary?

Modern creative work rarely fits into a simple human-or-AI category.

  • A writer may use AI for editing.

  • A photographer may use AI for noise reduction.

  • A composer may begin with an AI-generated draft and transform it entirely.

The spectrum reflects reality. It provides a clearer, more honest way to describe authorship.

What is the Five-Word Principle?

  • A practical gut-check for creators working with AI drafts:

  • If you cannot change five consecutive words from an AI-generated draft without breaking the meaning, you have not made it your own.

  • It is not a rigid rule — but a useful test of whether the human truly led the creative process.
